Recommendation: I Am Your Beast

Hi, I’m Anthesis and this is Indie Game Preachers. Each Friday I recommend interesting and exciting indie games that I think you’ll love.

Today I have 7 game recommendations + some extras!

We have even MORE new members this week. Welcome and thank you all so much for joining - it really means the world to me!

As always, let me know if you have indie games that you believe more people should know about. You can ‘reply’ directly to this email with your suggestions. 😁

P.S. If you are on Bluesky you can follow us (here).

Refer a Friend = +1 Entry

I’m launching a referral program. If you know anyone who would like to receive our free email, then you can send them your personal link below. It would really help me out.

I’m going to be selecting (at random) 3 people who referred a friend and buying them whatever indie game they want as a thank you. :)

The winners will be announced in next week’s newsletter.

Game #1 - I Am Your Beast

“LIKE A FPS HOTLINE MIAMI.”

GENRE: FPS, FAST-PACED, RUN AND GUN, STRATEGY, ACTION, ARCADE

This is one of my favorite games this year. Very much underrated!

I Am Your Beast is a lot like a FPS Hotline Miami.

You play as Alphonse Harding, a former secret agent who has been retired for six years.

After being pressured to take on "one last job" far too many times, you refuse the latest mission.

This decision sparks a relentless guerrilla war between you and the Covert Operations Initiative (COI), leaving the forest strewn with bodies and spent bullet casings.

The combat is so much fun! There are many ways you can decide to play each level.

E.g. Guns blazing or a more stealthy and calculated run.

The ability choose how you play gives the game so much replayability.

This is what I like most about the game. It makes you want to retry your run and beat your score.

Runs are graded with letters just like in Hotline Miami.

If you love optimizing runs then this game is for you.

The only negative is that you can complete the game in 2-3 hours if you blast through each of the 27 levels.

However, I don’t think this is a deal breaker by any means, as the best part of I Am Your Beast is replaying levels and discovering new runs and strategies.

So if you like Hotline Miami and optimizing runs, then definitely check it out!

Game #2 - Mouthwashing

A MUST PLAY FOR ALL HORROR FANS

GENRE: PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR, STORY RICH, RETRO STYLE

Too many horror games rely on cheap jump-scares to “terrify” their players.

Mouthwashing isn’t one of them.

The scariest games let your mind do all the heavy lifting!

This truly is another indie masterpiece.

I’ve already seen multiple nominations for best indie game of 2024.

Mouthwashing is a first-person horror game set aboard the Tulpar, a shipwrecked space freighter stranded under an eternal sunset.

The five surviving crew members face isolation, despair, and the horrifying aftermath of Captain Curly’s failed attempt to kill them all—including himself.

Maimed but alive, Curly becomes the silent witness to the crew’s slow descent into madness as they struggle to survive in a godless, empty void.

^That description is sure to get your attention if you love horror games.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Introducing Community Spotlight!

A new section in our newsletter that promotes underappreciated community members.

They may be indie game devs, content creators or indie game artists.

We believe their work deserves more attention and we can help them out by liking, wishlisting or sharing their work.

P.S. If you have recommendations for underappreciated devs, artists, content creators etc. just reply to our emails letting us know!

Hinarcia - Indie Game Streamer

This week’s spotlight is for Hinarcia.

I came across Hinarcia on Bluesky and have loved watching her indie gaming streams!

She is insanely knowledgeable about indie games and is really helping indie devs by playing their games.

I highly recommend following!

You can support and follow Hinarcia in the following places:

Game #3 - Communite

A COZY AND HAPPY MULTIPLAYER CITY BUILDER.

GENRE: CASUAL, SIMULATION, CITY BUILDER, COMMUNITY

Communite is a cozy and peaceful city builder that focuses on community.

Due to be released in Q1 2025, it can currently be wishlisted on Steam.

It reminded me of Webfishing and its community focused relaxation.

I think Communite is likely to have a similar happy atmosphere with addictive gameplay.

This is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Game #4 - Bread and Fred

YOU AND SOMEONE YOU LOVE (FOR NOW) TIED TOGETHER

GENRE: CO-OP, 2D PLATFORMER, PIXEL ART, CLIMBING

Bread and Fred is a co-op 2D platformer that sees you and a friend attempt to climb to the top of a snowy summit.

The catch is that you are tied together, which can definitely make it a little difficult to say the least!

If you enjoyed chained together then you’ll love this too.

It is a lot of fun, but be warned that it can become tedious if you have the wrong partner lol.

So please choose your partner wisely!!

I loved this review that sums up selecting a bad partner:

“It’s just like Celeste but if you were tied to a useless sack of SHI-@!”

A fun game worth checking out.

Game #5 - Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate

CHESS, BUT YOUR ARMY HAS ABANDONED YOU AND NOW ALL YOU HAVE IS YOUR SHOTGUN

GENRE: CHESS, ROUGELIKE, TURN BASED STRATEGY

Another indie game gem!

I love rougelikes, so this is right up my street.

“Chess, but you replace your entire army with a royal shotgun. A unique strategy roguelike based on the timeless checkboard classic.”

Winner of Ludum Dare #50 Jam.

Game #6 - Conan Throwbrien

A FEVER DREAM OF A GAME.

GENRE: DICE-THROWER, TURN BASED STRATEGY

If you love obscure and crazy games, then I recommend Conan Throw-brien.

I came across this on Itch. You can play it for free in browser.

It’s a turn based dice thrower were you play as Conan Throw-brien, not to be mistaken for Conan O’brien, even though the dev describes the game as an impending lawsuit.

Your job is to keep the audience happy or you’ll lose your job.

You’ll either love it or hate it!

Game #7 - That’s Not My Neighbor

IF YOU LIKE PAPERS PLEASE THEN YOU’LL LOVE THIS!

GENRE: SIMULATION, PUZZLE, ATTENTION TO DETAIL

If Papers Please is your type of game, then this is for you.

The Doppelganger Detection Department (D.D.D.) is hiring — are you up for the challenge?

Out of work and desperate for cash, you take the doorman position in your building.

It’s 1955, and for reasons no one fully understands, doppelgangers are appearing more frequently than ever. The D.D.D. has stepped in to address the growing threat.

Your task is simple: decide who gets to enter the building. But don’t let your guard down—one overlooked detail could cost you dearly.
